"Nature doesn't have to be complicated to be transformative. I've seen older adults discover confidence they thought they'd lost, just by walking a gentle woodland trail with the right support and planning. That's what drives my work — making sure everyone gets to experience that."
Siobhan's journey into outdoor recreation for older adults started with volunteer work. In 2010, she joined Cork's Active Retirement movement and saw firsthand how nature experiences transform wellbeing. That sparked everything — her Environmental Science degree from University College Cork in 2009 became the foundation, but the real education came from time in the field.
What began as conservation work shifted into something more personal. Over 14 years, she's developed and maintained over 30 gentle woodland trails across West Cork. She's partnered with Coillte, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and local communities to create routes that genuinely work for older adults. Not shortcuts or simplified versions — real trails designed around senior mobility, safety, and the experience itself.
Her approach combines practical field knowledge with research-backed understanding of senior fitness and accessibility. At servicestationsuppliers Ltd, she leads content development around senior leisure activities, bringing that lived experience of working with older adults in real outdoor settings. She knows Glengarriff Woods like most people know their local park. She's walked those paths with different age groups, different fitness levels, different seasons. That knowledge isn't theoretical — it's worn into her boots.
